Lenora Ford Brown Plays Liszt/Paganini Etudes

This album contains the Grand Etudes after Paganini by Franz Liszt and was recorded in a live performance at the UMTA Convention on October of 1993. The Etudes are: I. Preludio - Andante; Etude - Non troppo lento; II. Andante - Andantino capriccioso; III. La Campanella - Allegretto; IV. Vivo; V. Allegretto - "The Chase"; and VI. Quasi Presto.

In a Salt Lake Tribune concert review it was said about Ms. Brown's playing, "Even among big-name pianists, there are remarkably few who are able to play music of Liszt so convincingly. Frequently Liszt is played with such spasmodic, choppy surges that the music is incomprehensible. Artur Rubinstein was a splendid exception and so is Brown".

Another wrote "Her performance of the Pagannini Etudes was brilliant and stylish and brought out levels of musical understanding rare in performances of works presenting such enormous technical challenges. One cannot imagine the hours she lavished on those pieces. The performance was worthy of presentation in Abravanel Hall."

Chopin's Concerto No. 1 in E minor

James Michael Caswell, conducter; Lenora Ford Brown, guest pianist

Concert Review - Deseret News March 21, 1998
SOLOIST SHINES WITH THE SALT LAKE SYMPHONY

"The final work on the program was Chopin's Piano Concerto No.1 in E minor, with Lenora Ford Brown as soloist. This wonderfully melodic work is well known to all aficionados of piano music, and Brown did an outstand- ing job bringing out both the lyrical beauty of the music and also its dramatic force. Caswell and the orchestra did a good job accompanying Brown. They never overpowered her. The loveliest movement of this concerto is the slow second movement, which basically is a nocturne for piano. The orchestral accompaniment here is almost superfluous. The piano carries all the musical weight in this movement, and Brown played this music with graceful lyricism. Brown shone brilliantly at this concert. Her artistry definitely made her the highlight of the evening."

Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach
A live performance by Lenora Ford Brown presented in 1985 at the University of Utah as a Tricentennial Bach concert celebrating the 300th birthday of J. S. Bach. These partitas, composed in the French and German styles, have been called the "Rock Music" of Bach's time. They were the first works Bach published and yet possibly his most difficult to play. The objective when performing the partitas is to make them relaxed, happy and joyful. Despite the rhythmic and technical challenges for the performer, the partitas are easy and fun for the listener.

Johann Christian Bach Concerto in G Major
Johann Christian Bach was born in Leipzig in 1735,the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach by his second wife. J. C. Bach, as he was commonly called, studied with his father until age 15. The early 1770s was the height of his career as a performer and composer. Many of his works were published.

Beethoven and Rachmaninoff Sonatas

Beethoven Sonata in F Op. 10 No. 2
Beethoven wrote this sonata in 1797 in Bonn, Germany. That year Napolean defeated Austria and John Adams was elected president of the United States. Beethoven wrote in a letter at that time, "I am living more pleasantly now since I began to mingle more with people. You will scarcely believe how lonely and sad my life was for two years; my bad hearing haunted me everywhere like a ghost, and I fled from mankind and seemed like a misanthrope, though I was far from being one." Beethoven was 27 years old.

Beethoven Sonata Op. 111 in C Minor
The last piano sonata written by this great master, it has been called the greatest of the piano sonatas. Published in 1822 during a very dark period when Beethoven was deaf and isolated. Performed by Lenora Ford Brown in a live concert at Steinway Hall.

Rachmaninoff Sonata for Piano and Cello Op. 19
A live performance of the Rachmaninoff Sonata for Piano and Cello Op. 19 in Los Angeles, California by Gayle Smith and Lenora Ford Brown. In a concert review, the music critic said, "Smith put the lush melodies forward with little exaggeration, her portamento touches sparing enough to be effective. The cellist's speed and accuracy were never in doubt. Brown participated fully, providing pertinent support at every turn, and taking her solo opportunities with assurance."
